IS TEACHER ONLY A TEACHER…?

Teachers serve the society by instructing and guiding countless students through the different stages of their growth. They prepare them to take on the world which they are a part of. Teachers play a vital role in the lives of the students in their classrooms. Teachers are best known for the role of educating the students that are placed in their care. Beyond that, teachers serve many other roles in the classroom. Teachers set the tone of their classrooms, build a warm environment, mentor and nurture students, become role models, and listen and look for signs of trouble. The teacher must play different roles in the student’s life. He/she must be a friend, he/she must be a guide, he/she must be a philosopher.

Teacher is not just a teacher she also plays the role of a mother to the child in the school. The child spends more time in schools when compared to at home. It will be the duty and responsibility of the teacher to make the student comfortable in the school and also safeguard the student,

There are different roles a teacher will play in the lives of students some of them are:

A GUIDE: as the students grow up the teachers play a very important role in shaping the student’s future. The seeds are sown when the mind is young. It is the teacher who must now not only help the student decipher the facts and the figures, he must be his confidant and his counsel. A teacher is not just a facilitator of knowledge, but also a guide for students. Students can approach their teachers anytime during their schools or even after their schooling to have some good connection with teachers and take few advice and practical knowledge about life and further studies as well.

A ROLE MODEL: a role model is a person who inspires and encourages us to strive to greatness, live our life to the fullest potential and see the best in ourselves, a role model is someone we admire and someone to whom we look forward to be like, through their commitment to excellence and through their ability to make us realize our own personal growth. Teachers can also be role models to their students, the life of many teachers can inspire their students and there are students who follow the life styles of their teachers in their real life.

A FRIEND: a friend is someone who understand you and someone you can depend on. If the teacher assumes the role of a friend, learning is no longer a task but a pleasure. As the child grows up he/she will want to share their feelings to someone and be dependent on them for suggestions and advice, at this time I their life it would be better if someone who has already seen life and already has experience in life can suggest them to do good instead of asking from the people of the same age as they are. Hence, here comes the necessity for a teacher to play the role of a friend as a teacher and a well-wisher.

Hence, we can conclude that a teacher is not just a teacher but can play various roles in the life of a student. Its just the belief and the connectivity that is required from the students towards their teachers and share their emotions to their teachers. The teachers are also required to create that atmosphere towards their students that the students can be themselves to their teachers and share their thoughts and ideas.

PARENTS INVOLVEMENT IN EDUCATIONAL PROCESS

Parents involvement in education is associated with positive outcomes for the students. However, little is known about how parents decide to be involved in their child’s education. Parents become involved in children’s education because, they have developed a personal construction of the parental role that includes participation in their children’s education. They have developed a positive sense of efficacy for helping their children succeed in school and they perceive the opportunities for involvement from children and the school. Parents also choose specific forms of involvement in response to specific domains of skill and knowledge they possess, the total demands on their times and energy and specific requests for involvement from children and also from the school. Engaging families in the education of their children is increasingly viewed as important, with research finding that children achieve more when schools and families work together.

But the question to be is asked is, Why parents involvement? Parental involvement is known to be linked with improved behavior, regular attendance and positive attitudes. In addition to this, parents being involved also shows your child the care u give them about his/her education and their schooling life. That in itself can make children appreciate the importance of education and help them to understand that what they are doing has a purpose. Parental involvement provides a support network for children, which is particularly important when they face academic hurdles or other challenges with friendships or any other extra-curricular activities. It also means you know where your children’s education journey is going and are able to be part of the highs and lows along the way.

To what extent can a parent be involved in the schools? As seen earlier it is to be accepted that parent involvement in the child’s education is required but as to what extent can the parents be involved is the question to be asked to oneself. If the parent involvement is provided 100% in the educational life of the student, then we consider that the student is not capable of handling his/her school life on their own. Parents are just supports or a stakeholders of the educational system, they should understand the needs of the students or their children and provide them with the necessary requirements instead of involving completely into the school life. Like an adult who possess two different lives, i.e a personal life and a professional life, a school going kid will also possess two lives which is the school life and the personal life. Parents have a complete control over the personal life of the child until certain age, whereas when it comes to the point of parent involvement in the school life of the student, parents have to take back a step and understand that there are other people who is also been involved in the school life other child and respect and give them their space.

As a result, children whose parents stay involved are more likely to have higher self-esteem, be disciplined, have more self-motivation and tend to achieve better grades, regardless of their ethnic, social or racial backgrounds.

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES FOR A MODERN TEACHER

Today modern teacher skills are a broad area of consideration. Teachers know that they must adapt new qualities to transforming the education system. As we already know that the students of this generation also possess many skills it is also a challenge for the teachers of this generation to also possess certain skills which are better than the students in order to match the level and the quality of the students of the current generation. The basic qualities of a teacher of all time is time management skills, lesson plan making skill, parents teachers interaction and others. Technology also interrupts itself into the lives of the students and rewires their brains. It affects the learning of the students and also creates a new kind of student with different expectations for learning.

As students are well equipped with the current technology and media the requirements of the teachers also change according to time. The teachers also need to adapt new technology and techniques in their teaching process, teacher should be global minded and should accept all the technology that is required. Few essential qualities for a modern teacher are as follows:

  1. CREATIVITY: It is essential for the teacher to be creative enough as the students whom he/she is teaching are all well-equipped in today’s technology. So creative teachers bring more to classroom rather than just knowledge of teaching. Teachers should also be educated in other fields as well.
  2. GLOBAL MINDSET: Technology has broken down many barriers. The classroom and the market place are global now. The way we look at things has changed in the recent times, the new way of looking at things and how we learn about it has also changed. Considering this fact, it is also required for a teacher to change the mindset and start thinking globally and rationally.
  3. A DESIRE TO LEARN: it is the duty of a teacher to create a desire to learn in the minds of the students. Hence, the teacher should create an atmosphere for the students in a way that the students are ready to learn and their minds are already set in the desire of learning new idea and methods.
  4. GUIDE: a teacher should not only be a teacher in the classroom but also should be a guide to students in and out of the classroom, a guide not only guiding the students in the educational field but also guide them towards the extra curriculum activities and engage them in others activities in and out of the school environment.

So, the teacher should possess all the essential qualities in order to be a full fledged teacher and a guide and a supporting hand for their students. These not only inherit the qualities of a good teacher but also helps the students grow up as a complete individuals.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN SCHOOL

Religious education makes a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum by developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influences on individuals’ communities, societies and cultures. It also enables to respond to a range of important questions related to spiritual development in students. Religious education is concerned with the deep meaning that individuals and groups made of their experiences and how this helps them give purpose to their lives.

The main aim of having a school uniform is to showcase that “all are equal” in the school, be it a Hindu Muslim or a Christian, or white skinned or a dark skinned or a Kannada speaking, English speaking or any other language for that matter, students all of them wear the same uniform and come to school. Though they have been preaching in schools that all are equal there is no changes happening in the society, it’s still shown in the hearts of the students that there exists discrimination of caste or color. The students tend to make friendship with other students who are of the same religion. Hence, there must be an addition of religious education in the curriculum where the students are clearly taught about each religion and the norms of each religion and the main motive being “respect all religions” they should also be taught the contribution of religious and the spiritual dimensions of religion to the society.

Students should be taught that “no religion is high or low” and the only religion that exists is the “humanity”, at first we should learn to respect the feelings of humans and accept the fact that all are equal in the society and there have been equal importance and consideration given for each person of the society. Considering the fact that there is an existence of the three main religion in India i.e Hindu, Muslim and Christian. We believe that today’s children are the future citizens of the country and it is also evident in the society the conflicts between the Hindu and Muslims or be it the conflicts between the Muslims and Christians, we should make it clear to the students that all are equal we should not destroy each other. There have been cases and situations where the Muslims have stoned the Churches and destroyed them, setting this a negative example of destroying the nation, we have to make it aware to the students that they should not follow this and instead be supportive to one and other in the society. As found in schools as of now, the catholic schools only preach about Christianity and Muslim schools preach only about Islam. When the schools only are being divided due to caste and religion then there is no use of preaching the concept of unity in the schools. Instead an Islamic school can also preach about the existence of Christianity and the Hindu religion. In the same way a Catholic school can preach about the existence of the other two religions.

Teaching about the religion in schools creates respect in the minds of the young children for their own religion as well as the other religion that exists in the country.

ANIMAL AWARENESS IN SCHOOLS

Throughout human history there have been great changes to human cultures and civilizations because of animals. All sorts of animals impact our lives daily… like cows that gives us milk, dogs are friends that protect us, all these animals are part of a complex web of systems that influences our lives for better or for worse. Some people respect and understand their importance in our lives but others impact us in less obvious ways. Animals have appeared in our art, our stories, our food and our homes for thousands of years.

Another game-changing and life changing animal that we still love today is dogs. Dogs have had a very long and ancient history of relating humans. There are many different breeds of dogs. But the funny things about dogs being “man’s best friend” is that through wars, through changing cultures. Across the globe these tail wagging animals have saved our lives. But in modern days dogs are linked to wolves or other wild dogs that chose to stay close to humans either for scarps of food or protection and humans have also benefited in getting a “best friend,” a hunter and added protection from other animals or people.

As the kannada proverb gidavaagi baggaddu maravaagi baggithe…?(ಗಿಡವಾಗಿ ಬಗ್ಗದ್ದು ಮರವಾಗಿ ಬಗ್ಗಿತೇ ..?) says, if u don’t teach in the childhood then they will not learn or correct themselves as they grow up. So, considering this fact it is also required for the school to include in their curriculum to teach the children about the importance of animals is our lives and how to protect them. There are people who treat dogs as their “best friends” and sometimes even as one of their child or sibling and there are other set of people who treat dogs as just dogs who guard their homes and protect them from theft or robbery. But we should also realize the fact that dogs also feelings and they are the most faithful animals on land. All animals for that matters stays faithful to their master,

So this thought has to be put up into the minds of young children and that can be done only at school, of course home is a second school for children so this should also be taught to them at home.

There was a recent news on television were three school going kids of class three have burnt three live puppies on road and have stoned one puppy to death, and the mother of those puppies was in search for her children for almost 3 days and when it found that the children have been dead, the pain of the mother dog is unimpressible the news reader also states that there should be awareness created in the little minds of the children that animals are also some living creatures on land surviving same as humans and even they possess families and some feelings towards each other.

Respect is the most important discipline which has to be taught to students in schools as well as their homes, respect here should also include respect for humans, animals and the nature.
